Blagojevich-the first night is the toughest…

That’s it! Rod Blagojevich has reported to Federal Prison to serve his 14 year term. Yes- 14 years! The sentence seems as absurd as Blago himself. As a prison coach and criminal justice expert I see all kinds of cases and people. Really, I have seen it all and then there is Blago. Now he will be known by his infamous last name and hi inmate number. What did he do last night? He probably watched American Idol like everybody else did! I am sure we will be getting Blago updates but he will fade from view as the rest of the infamous unmates do.

To keep the 14 years in perspective we must remember that Blagojevich had many bites at the apple. His first trial ended in only one conviction and he could have accepted responsibility and cut a sweet deal at that point. But, no- Blago had to prove he was innocent, the wiretaps were fakes and he was destined to be a reality star and media darling. Vintage client profile of mine and somebody who is grandiose, narcissistic and full of entitlement. Remember the 8 patterns of criminal thinking I have written about??? There are 3 right there.

The reason Blago received the 14 years is that his case has cost the rest of us millions of dollars to prosecute and DEFEND. Yes, defend. After the first trial, Blagojevich claimed he could no longer afford his defense and so as with any defendant, some of his legal bills were picked up by the same government trying to put him in prison. Now it will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep him in prison.

And, we have not even talked about the most important part of this case. The VICTIMS- aka the wife and daughters of Rob Blagojevich. Families are the forgotten consequences of crime. We have seen very little of Patti Blagojevich except when she took her husband’s place on the reality show “I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here” and in a few recent interviews. We have also heard nothing about the children and the fact that they will now grow up without their father and with the stigma and shame he has left them. This is the sad part of the story and makes one wonder why Blago didn’t think of this. I understand that when he was on his crime spree of calls, the family got lost in the mess of his mind. I have been there. But, when the jig was up and he had the opportunity to accept his role and do a small prison stunt he just could not do it. Not even for his family.

It seems that even now Rod Blagojevich will not go away quietly. He will have one last press conference. Sorry Rod- no more reality shows, no more memoir, no more talk shows just inmate number 40892-424 and a lot of time to grow up. Even for you change is possible.

As for Patti Balgojevich and her girls. They need lots of support and professional therapy. They also need to be involved in their community and show that it was not them who committed the crime and that they are going to learn and grow from this experience. This can be done and even while they stand by Rod and support him. After all, sometimes prison can be a transformative experience and maybe they will become closer in a more authentic way.

Could Rod Blagojevich and Jerry Sandusky be cellmates?

As a prison consultant and coach I prepare people and their families for prison and re-entry. But, I do not work with violent offenders and those who have harmed children. Mainly I work with people who have committed white-collar crimes, drug crimes and of course political corruption. So, ordinarily the chances of my clients being bunkmates with a Sandusky type are slim. But, this week we had two well-known “white collar” criminals receive sentences of more than ten years. Rod Blagojevich and Raj Rajaratnam. Actually, Raj began his 11 year Federal Prison term this week, while Blago was sentenced to 14 years in Federal Prison and will begin in February.

Federal Prison Camp vs Medium security

First of all let’s clear up the myths and the differences between a Federal Camp and higher security levels. In the Federal system a “camp” is where mainly non-violent offenders serve their time. This is where I served my time and other well-known people like Martha Stewart and Steve Madden. A camp has no cells and no fences. Bathrooms are down the hall and you can move around “freely” doing allowed hours. In fact, a camp operates on the honor system. An odd concept in that you are still in prison and must obey the rules. Camps are designed to deter people from making the choice to lose their freedom while offering those who begin at higher security levels a semi transition back to society. Really, they are a secret world and an odd one at that. The usual rule is that a person who receives a sentence of ten years and under is “camp eligible” assuming the crime is non-violent. But, this week illustrates that white collar criminals better get real and club fed no longer exists.

Jerry Sandusky and the Blago connection

I have predicted that the Feds will ultimately charge Jerry Sandusky. This because he most likely took children across state lines, and as is typical with disgraceful cases like his, probably is into Internet porn as well. As Blago received 14 years he is NOT going to a Federal Prison Camp to begin his term. Rather, he will go to what is called a FCI. This is the type of prison Bernie Madoff is in. Mainly these prisons have people who have committed drug crimes but also more heinous acts including murder and child rape. This is hardcore. Not MSNBC lock-up but no joke. Triple bunks included. So, is it possible that Sandusky and Blago end up in the same slammer? Odd as it may seem, yes! This because big mouth Blagojevich received such along prison term. The thought of these two sharing bunk space may seem odd and is, but so is prison. Remember, prison is the ULTIMATE EQUALIZER.

Blago, next time you will listen to me and any others out there, beware and get real. This means YOU Jon Corzine. Incarcerventions needed.

Rod Blagojevich and the Consequences of his crimes- His children…

By now we all know that the final spectacle of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich will play out in Federal Court over a two day sentencing hearing this week. A two day sentencing hearing is odd, just like the case of Blagojevich. After all, last year when Blago was convicted on only one count and a mistrial was declared on all others, he could have cut a plea deal that would have landed him in prison for a much shorter stint. But, Blago is Blago and he never believed HE would be hitting Fed Town. Rather, he wrote a book and tried to get on the NBC show “I’m a celebrity get me out of Here” and Celebrity Apprentice.

So, here we are. Blagojevich is looking at 15-20 years. Ouch! Blago will most likely not be “camp eligible.” That is he will have to go to a medium security Federal Prison due to the fact that his sentence is likely to be over ten years. What’s the difference? Poor Rod will have a cell with a toilet in it. He will not have private bathrooms down the hall that camps have. And, he will have restricted movement. In a Federal Prison that is medium security or higher, an inmate may not walk freely. Rather, they walk on certain times on the hour in certain directions. Still, not so bad and better than what his family will have to learn to cope with.

What a disaster for his wife and daughters. They will pay the main price. Yes, as Blago relaxes in Federal Prison and orders beef jerky from commissary, they will be left to live the reality of a life not only without a father and provider, but also with the public humiliation that their father has so graciously left them.

Families are the forgotten consequence of crime. That is the harsh reality. Too often we focus on the person going to prison. As a prison coach I have heard it all, and I have been there done this. Believe me, Blago will do fine in the slammer. He will learn much needed humility and the harsh reality that prison is the ultimate equalizer. He may even come home in 2022 or so a better person. But, what should his family do to cope?

Patricia Blagojevich and her two daughters will need to seek a life without the media glare and without the crazy world that was their father. If they can do this remains to be seen. Remember, it was Patricia who took Blago’s place on “I’m a Celebrity Get me out of Here” when the judge would not let Blago himself travel and leave the country. Ahhh. The things people do for their man in trouble?!

But, now Pat must be a mom and take care of her kids. That means therapy and quality experts assisting them, not salacious media. Please no reality shows. How about trying to take the lessons learned and making a positive difference.? Remember, they didn’t do the crime, but they will be doing the time in a manner of speaking. The first step after therapy begins should be some quality community service where the girls can realize they are not their father and where they will gain some much needed self-esteem while helping others.

Change is possible but it takes hard work. Get ready Blagojevich family. This will be a tough task, but you may realize the calm and quiet are much needed and helpful. For the rest of us, let the kids be and hope for the best. Stay tuned…

Blago- What’s next???

As readers of mine know, I have written much about ex governor Rod Blagojevich and what he should have done. Last summer I wrote that in my opinion Blago should have cut a deal and saved the taxpayers and himself a load of money and time. Now, as we find out, Blago is going to have lots of time to think about this mess.

Today Blagojevich was convicted of 17 counts of various Federal charges. All felonies, all-serious. He is looking at 8 years if he is LUCKY. We will find out when he is sentenced in a few months. But now, Blago will not be permitted to travel without court permission and will begin what is known as post conviction supervision. Blago will have to check in with a probation officer and submit to various rules. No more reality TV and no more games. Well, probably one more game- an appeal.

Blagojevich is the second Illinois governor in a row to face Federal Prison and corruption charges. Blago will also probably start to have his lawyers produce all kinds of alternative sentence proposals and mitigating circumstances. For example, a forensic mental health evaluation etc…

Blago is a prime example of a person whose ego has led them to prison and a great example of a person who was in need of an incarcervention. For a man who loves the media he sure seems lucky. This media coverage is not positive and yet many people are too busy with the Tot mom Casey Anthony story to pay attention. But, by the time a Blago sentencing comes around we will all be watching.

Where Blago serves his jail time will be the next hot topic in the rumor mill otherwise known as inmate.com. Blago- the offer still stands- CALL ME. You need a good prison coach.

At least we have BLAGO!!!

May 2011 in Chicago has brought some sadness and anxiety for those who were Oprah fans. But, alas. At least we have BLAGO. Well, for now.

As the defense case in the re-trail of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich rolls on, the entertainment and big names keep coming. Or, at least the names are supposed to. We did see current mayor Rahm Emanuel take the stand briefly and are promised more are to come.

Blago is everything that is wrong with our criminal justice system. First and foremost he shows just how unwisely the U.S. spends our money on criminal prosecution’s that have gone off track. Remember, that last summer Blago faced a similar trail. At that trial he was found guilty on one of the 24 charges and the jury was hung on the others. So, this time around Blago has asked that the Feds pay for his legal bills. That means us! How is this possible? Well, Blago says he is deeply in debt and is due the same treatment as others who cannot pay for a defense. And, in the spirit of equal justice, that is true. But, isn’t it another crime to take advantage of the taxpayers you have already ripped off by your lack of public SERVICE?

So, Blago, this insider urged you to make a deal and get on with the show last summer. But, now you really are boxed in. Not even “Celebrity Apprentice” or other reality TV can fix this mess. One good note- I will work with you for FREE in the spirit of positive change. You know my number, call me! 1-866-229-8264.
