Young actress Ariel Winter and shining the light on CHILD ABUSE

Modern Family TV star Ariel Winter is now front-page news. Not for her talent, but for allegations her own mother has filed against and about her. But, this case shines the light on more than just a child star, a stage mom and the law. It helps us take a good look at the huge problem of child abuse and neglect in our country.

In fact, every day five children DIE from abuse or neglect in the U.S. This is shameful. In the case of Ariel Winter it is hard to know where to start and what is fact and fiction. What we do know is that this 14-year-old star of Modern Family has a sad home life mainly due to her mother Chrisoula Workman. As is typical in Hollywood there is now a fight over the $75,000 a week Ariel earns and who should have custody/guardianship over her and obviously over her money.

What is curious is that Workman has called the authorities on her own daughter and thus has incriminated herself! In September Workman filed a police report and a DCFS report that she “walked in” on her 14-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old boyfriend having sex. To make matters worse she claims that a sexual relationship was going on for five months. So, where was Workman, the mother, during this time? Why wasn’t she protecting her child and why did she ONLY report this months later?

Additionally, Ariel was placed Oct 3 under the temporary care of her older sister Shanelle Workman partly because of allegations that their mother was emotionally and physically abusive. Even more shocking is that Shanelle was placed in foster care in the 1990’s due to problems with her mother. There is no doubt that there is a form of child abuse here. The question is to what extent.

Chrisoula seems to have handled the situation ALL wrong, and certainly not like a caring mother. Now she will have to face a CPS- DCFS investigation and if Chrisoula is wrong, she herself could face multiple charges. If Chrisoula is right, the boyfriend Cameron Palatas could face statutory rape charges himself. What a sad mess and true disaster. Those of familiar with the CPS- DCFS system know that not only is it flawed it is BROKEN. Often times unskilled volunteers called CASA workers get involved and complicate things further. In cases like this when there is a great deal of money at stake, these cases if not handled properly drag on for years and lead to fight after fight.

I have much experience guiding clients through the CPS process. When it works it does save children and when it doesn’t it destroys them. Family court is one of the worst places on earth. It will be interesting to see how justice works in this case. Certainly I will be watching closely and hoping that if nothing else we can use this case as a lighting rod to look at the problem and sickness of child abuse in this country.

Stay tuned…

Casey Anthony + Probation= EPIC FAIL

Here we go again. Another month, another probation report and meeting between Ms. Casey Anthony and her Florida probation officer. Remember, Anthony is on formal probation. That means she has requirements ranging from therapy to financial matters. Casey also has to prove that she has a job or goes to school.

Thus far it has been apparent to me that Anthony has been working the system. Yes, this started when she was first let out on bond and continued while she was in county jail. Then she worked her magic during her trial. Somehow this case became so confused that the Florida Department of Corrections sent Anthony a letter while she was in jail that she had completed her one-year of probation. As I said on numerous media outlets, that would be impossible, and of course when challenged, Anthony was ordered to serve her formal probation in FLORIDA.

What makes Casey Anthony so special? The media attention and the fear that brings the system when there have been grave mistakes made. Yes, I am sure that the Florida Department of Corrections, her probation officer and the criminal court system wishes she would just fade away. How naïve! In fact, Anthony and the attention she brings will only build as we begin summer, and as luck would have it will climax just in time for the upcoming fall television season.

I have written and said numerous times that I thought Anthony had already violated her probation. I stand by this comment. After all, she claims to have no money, no job and no resources, yet she is making video blogs on a NEW computer and of course selling them. Who does she think she is? Is it any wonder that she is delusional and grandiose? Of course not. Did you ever think just who has been paying her bills?

Here are my thoughts- Some based on rumor, some based on non published yet factual information:

Casey Anthony has had a series of benefactors ranging from crazy fame whores to people who think she is innocent.

Anthony has been selling her information to various outlets like Radar Online. There is NO such thing as “leaked” information in this case. Everything has been potted and planned.

Anthony has received cash payments from other media outlets and “friends” of hers have also filtered some of this money to her. In the real world this is called money laundering.

Anthony does not have a job and still provides her probation officer no source of income. After all of these months a regular person on probation would be called to task. In this case we even have Anthony flaunting her success in front of the world and still no action by the judicial system.

The Federal Government is looking into this matter because Anthony has I.R.S. tax liens that she is making no payments on.

SO, what to conclude and what’s next????? I still maintain that at some point Anthony will be called on all of this illegal behavior. The problem may well be that the probation department has made errors just like the Department of Corrections did and like the court itself did. They are embarrassed.

As anybody who follows my work and me knows, I am a believer in EQUAL JUSTICE. Nothing about the probation of Casey Anthony has been equal or fair. This I know having been on probation myself. I urge everybody to demand more while keeping our eyes on the bigger picture of child abuse and use this case as THE example to make positive change. Do not let the initial success of Casey Anthony take the focus off the fact that a child is dead and 5 children die EVERYDAY in the U.S. from abuse or neglect. We must stop child abuse.

Caylee Anthony and Trayvon Martin- Wake up Florida!

Surprise, surprise. Casey Anthony has found religion… Casey Anthony has managed to get herself back into the news yet again. This time the website Radar Online ran an “exclusive” story that Casey has found religion. Of course! This often happens when people are in prison or on probation but Casey manages to make it all about her. So much for the wonderful therapy she is supposed to be receiving.

As we all know, Antony is on formal probation and must check in with her probation officer once a month in person. She also is required to have a job and/or attend school. In typical Anthony fashion she is “attending” online courses. And yet, the interesting thing is that she appears to be paying her bills and in good standing with her probation officer. How is this possible? Let’s not forget that she has IRS liens and owes the State of Florida money for the investigation into the death of her daughter Caylee. Is she paying these debts- NO. But, she is paying her Internet provider.

What is wrong with law enforcement in Florida? First, there was the weak and flawed investigation and then the Probation error! The people of Florida should demand better. Sad to say but now the Casey Anthony case is not the most famous case in Florida. Sadly we now have the murder of Trayvon Martin. That is yet another botched investigation. Enough is enough. How many children need to die? Yes, this is Florida where Adam Walsh was murdered in the 1970’s. In that case his father, John Walsh, became a one-man crusade to stop child abuse and other violent crimes. We must all learn from him and use Casey Anthony the way she uses the media and us. Use her to shine the light on child abuse and neglect. FIVE children die everyday in the United States from abuse or neglect. Five children we did not protect.

Hundreds of people have sent letters to the U.S. Attorney and FBI about the Casey Anthony case, and thousands have signed a petition through change.org. There is also a wealth of information on The Caylee Daily. We must make changes to our criminal justice system, and we must speak out. We need Equal Justice and we need it now. This is not the time for mistakes or sloppy behavior. Now is the time for change. After all, this is an election year and the time to demand more. Call your local representative and visit Childhelp.org to learn how to prevent child abuse.

Joe Paterno and true change- Time ran out!!!

A CONSPIRATOR IS A PERSON WHO TAKES PART IN A CONSPIRACY–AKA COVER-UP.

Why is this so confusing to people? I am not happy Joe Paterno passed away. Now he will be held accountable to the ultimate authority. Whatever your religious beliefs we must now all look at the issues Paterno and his silence and now his death bring up. There seems little doubt that he was in some way part of a cover-up. That could mean a true cover-up where information is hidden or a cover-up by OMISSION. That is a handshake not to disclose what he knew and when. Maybe it even meant urging others not to go to the police.

The actual facts regarding Paterno will never be known. We do know that for over 10 years various Penn State officials knew about a child RAPE, a criminal complaint and massive inappropriate behavior.

SO, what now? Joe Paterno the legendary coach of Penn State football has died at age 85. Did he do a KEN LEY? Yes, I did just say that!!! Who was Ken Lay? He was the CEO of ENRON. Lay died of a heart attack just as he was facing massive criminal charges and public scrutiny. Remember???

I am not comparing the actual crimes of Lay to the alleged poor behavior of Paterno. I am comparing their misguided moral compass, their grandiosity and their narcissism. The fact of the matter is that both had created what looked to be amazing legacies that in the end were tarnished by their poor choices. That is called CONSEQUENCES. Unfortunately neither had the time to make changes and reinvent themselves. Neither accepted responsibility for certain actions and both left their families with more than a mixed bag of public opinion and outrage.

I know that this may be a controversial opinion. That is the great thing about having been the person who made poor choices and has been lucky enough to have the time to flip the switch and make positive changes. The point is whether your name is Stewart, Lay, Feldman or Paterno- there are consequences and prices to be paid.

Here is hoping that people remember the good and the bad about Joe Paterno so we can all learn a lesson. After all, many believe that it takes a catastrophic event to make true change. In this case, I do hope that Paterno rests in peace. I also hope that all of us learn that there is NO excuse for child abuse. We must hold each other accountable and take action.

JOE PATERNO- CONSPIRATOR

A CONSPIRATOR IS A PERSON WHO TAKES PART IN A CONSPIRACY–AKA COVER-UP.

Why is this so confusing to people? I am not saying that old man Paterno should be arrested and hauled off to jail, but he is at this point an unindicted co-conspirator. He did not have to witness the crime to be a conspirator. But, there seems little doubt that he was in some way part of a cover-up. That could mean a true cover-up where information is hidden or a cover-up by OMISSION. That is a handshake not to disclose what he knew and when. Maybe it even meant urging others not to go to the police.

The actual facts regarding Paterno may never be known. We do know that for over 10 years various Penn State officials knew about a child rape, criminal complaint and massive inappropriate behavior.

Jerry Sandusky fits the profile of child predators. Even down to starting a charity to enable him to have more access to boys. This makes him sick and no doubt mentally ill. So, how do we explain the behavior of McQueary? And for that matter Paterno and everybody else?

As with many crimes and criminal acts, we cannot excuse them, but often we can explain them. But, the case of Penn State and the child rapes seems to have only one excuse and that is MONEY. Big, college football money.

The question now is, will this turn into a Federal case–I would bet YES–and how many others will be charged? Remember, people can be charged with conspiracy and obstruction. No wonder Paterno and the rest have hired high-priced criminal defense lawyers.

To Sandusky I can only say that the one place a child rapist never wants to go is PRISON. Karma and some good inmates will take good care of you.
