What is State Prison Really Like- Jodie Arias?

arias

Jodie Arias was just convicted of first degree murder in Arizona. That means she will soon be transferred to Arizona State Prison. And that means Perryville even if she goes to death row. I have known many women who have served time at Perryville and currently have several clients who are still there. Bottom line- Perryville is NO JOKE. It is hard time. They do offer inmate programs for various issues, especially substance abuse, but Arias will no doubt be a lifer and that is a whole different world.

The Perryville complex houses various security levels, but Arias will be in Maximum Security and will have non contact visits and be housed in a cell not a dorm. She will have access to television and like all inmates will be able to buy a radio and various items from the commissary. In fact, high profile cases like Arias, Scott Peterson, Manson and even Casey Anthony often have strangers deposit money on their books for such items. The most popular commissary item is Ice Cream- especially in Arizona in Summer!

But, this prison stay will be no cake walk and contrary to media reports, there is no tweeting or even computers or cell phones. And yes, there are female gangs at Perryville. SO what will life be like for Jodi Arias and her family? ROUTINE. Remember, the family is a victim of Arias also and they will need to decide if they keep in contact with her. No matter what the Arias family has an adjustment period also. I often coach families on how to deal with a loved one’s incarceration. In this case it will be a whole new normal as she is never coming home.

Often the person inside tries to hustle the outsiders and play on their sympathies. I suspect Arias will do this as well. Her family will need to learn boundaries and get over any guilt they may have while showing empathy and compassion for the victim and his family.

As for Jodie Arias she must prepare for long, boring days and lonely nights now that the court drama has ended. Perryville and it’s hard core rules await.

The Casey Anthony Family-aka Fantasyland!!!

Are we sure Casey Anthony didn’t pretend to work at Disneyland and not Universal Studios? That would make sense and she and her family would be the ringmasters of Fantasyland. Today we saw yet another side of George Anthony- the grieving grandfather. This after he was argumentative and very guilty acting yesterday about his “affair” with a volunteer searcher. This case fascinates us so much because there really is something so odd about this family.

First, they all lie; they all have anger problems and ugly outbursts. And, they have all sold pieces of the story to the media. This does not make the elder Anthony’s guilty of murder or a cover up but it does make them likely guilty of perjury. I heard one legal “expert” on television say that there is no way any of the Anthony family except Casey would be prosecuted, even for lying on the stand, because they are grieving. Please, give me a break! This is not equal justice in the least if that’s the case.

In the United States, we do prosecute people for perjury every day. Ask Martha, Barry Bonds and many, many others. What we do not put people in jail for is poor parenting. Maybe we should start.

The Casey Anthony case is also amazing because the camera is in the courtroom and we see every move Casey makes. Her true colors are showing. No longer does she look like the party girl or even the tough girl. She looks, angry, pathetic and scared. I wonder, how much medication and what meds she is on?

I still maintain that the jail visiting tapes tell a story and the family are not fully innocent in this matter. Does that mean Casey didn’t kill her daughter-nope. It just means there is more rotten here than whatever was in the trunk. Maybe sexual abuse, maybe drugs or maybe just plain psychopathy. Better yet, a combo!

With the case going to the jury very soon, we will all be left to speculate until a verdict is reached and even then there will be questions. Casey needs a good prison coach but her family needs an Incarcervention before something else happens.

The Casey Anthony Case- It’s all in the Jail tapes!!! Follow @incarcervention

The Casey Anthony “Tot mom” case is moving along, and what is becoming clear is something I have said all along. Much of the case and what led to this point is in the trove of family secrets. More on the secrets later. But, let’s start with the very odd way the Anthony family acted on the JAIL HOUSE taped visits. As a prison coach and former inmate myself, I can assure you that there is nothing normal about the way this family visited with each other on these tapes. This includes George, Cindy, Lee and Casey herself. I have prepared hundreds of families for visits and these set of jailhouse visits do not add up. Or rather maybe they do now that we are learning so much more about the Anthony family.

The facts: Casey Anthony is a known liar, her parents both have significant mental health issues and Lee is a shady character at best. In dispute is how Casey became such a good liar and why. Was she molested and by whom? Did her parents help her in the cover up before or is this cover up behavior new for the trial? And, what else is going on here? Several years ago Jane Velez Mitchell wrote a great book about infamous criminal cases called Secrets Can Be Murder. This could not be truer than in the tot mom case. But, what else tells the story?

Several things are very revealing in this case. From the way George and Cindy Anthony handled the media at first to their odd “acceptance” of the fact that Casey lied about Caylee being missing for 31 days to the bizarre explanation of the odor in the car, this adds up to one very intriguing mystery that we all want to solve.

But, back to the jail visiting tapes. I have analyzed these tapes several times. Remember, these visits were before Caylee had been found dead and were mostly at the beginning of the case. In fact, Casey was let out of jail for a brief period of time after some of the visits. So, how is it that the visits are all so calm and how did Lee become such an expert at talking in code during his visits? For most people the shock of visiting their child behind glass is traumatic. For this family it should have been even more traumatic as Caylee was missing and Casey had been shown to have lied about the fact that her daughter had been gone for 31 days. And, the Anthony’s had never visited their child in jail before. I understand how Casey was so calm as she has a fantastic capacity to live in fantasyland, but George, Cindy and Lee? This makes no sense and yet speaks volumes about what may be going on here.

Did the Anthony’s have a person coach them for these visits? Why does the emotion seem so disingenuous? Well, I doubt they were coached but maybe we can assume that each member of the family has their own baggage to cover up? And by baggage I mean anything and everything. As for Lee and his offers to track down people for Casey with “friends” in law enforcement and the way he stops her from saying too much because the visits are recorded, we can only assume he has watched a lot of television. The tapes between Casey and George are far more disturbing. I assure you this is not a normal visiting pattern. Especially visits at the beginning of a jail term of somebody who has yet to be convicted. ODD. I am not trying to solve this case nor can I. But, I would suggest people look at the tapes, the visits and the body language. They tell a story.

The Casey Anthony Trial- Show me the MONEY!!!

Here we are again. A very serious trial where certain lawyers seem more interested in what they perceive will be their after trial payday. Can you spell JOSE BAEZ? Every time he speaks he is pandering to the courtroom camera. What else can explain his poor performance as a defense lawyer on a case where his client is facing the death penalty? After all, Baez floated a theory during opening statements that the child drowned and the grandfather covered it up. HMMM. So, how does this explain the fact that tot mom was out partying and didn’t call the police for 31 days?

Baez is in a long line of lawyers and judges who have turned extreme courtroom behavior into a TV career. Think Judge Lance Ito, Marcia Clark, Judge Larry Seidlin from the Anna Nicole case and others. Remember, Judge Seidlen actually had a crying session in his courtroom! But, there is one big difference here. Baez is very unpopular and does not have the legal chops of the others. His courtroom antics have not been entertaining or legally sound, but I am sure he will try for his 15 minutes of fame.

This makes me wonder; how many people are set to profit off the death of Caylee Anthony? The grandparents have been shopping a book and have licensed pictures for a mid six-figure amount, Lee Anthony is also shopping a book and Tot mom herself has tried to sell pictures.

This insider proposes a law that proceeds would have to go to pay court costs on all matters that have wasted taxpayer money. Yes, change is possible but not when you let greed and fame get in the way.

Tot mom Casey Anthony- If convicted, what happens next???

Now that the Casey Anthony murder trial is winding down, what may become of Tot Mom Anthony? First of all, Tot mom must be worried as the trial is wrapping up. Many things will change if she is in fact found guilty of any of the charges. For one, her days of hanging out with her lawyers in street clothes will be gone and so will ALL of the attention. Well not quite. After all she will still have her celebrity status in State Prison, and I am sure the fan mail will keep coming. And, so will all of the cash from people who do not even know her. All of this on top if the endless request for media interviews that may actually be granted. Remember, this is a State Prison case, not a Federal Prison case. The Feds have no patience for prison interviews.

What else will change for tot mom? For one, she will enter State Prison and will no longer be housed on county jails. There is a bright side to that. She will actually have a permanent home! She also will have outside Yard privileges. Tot mom looks like she could use a little of the Florida sun. On the darker side, if Anthony is convicted and receives the death penalty, she will be one of only 4 women currently on Death Row in Florida. So, Tot mom may actually get the fame and attention she has always desired.

Here is the big question: if convicted, will Anthony be better taken car of in a Maximum-security prison or on Death Row? The jury is out on this, but death row inmates do have less social time and must be segregated from the general population. Lifers who are in the maximum-security units sometimes have perks like school, bible study, yoga and other outside activities. It all depends on how the prison feels they need to handle the security of the inmate. With tot mom, security will be a tough task and the Warden and his staff will have to make sure that Anthony is not only safe but not a danger or distraction to the other women.

Lots to consider, lots to pay for by taxpayers and for what??? Let this be a cautionary tale to others. Even in desperate situations, there are ways to get out. Harming a child is NOT one of them.
