Young actress Ariel Winter and shining the light on CHILD ABUSE

Modern Family TV star Ariel Winter is now front-page news. Not for her talent, but for allegations her own mother has filed against and about her. But, this case shines the light on more than just a child star, a stage mom and the law. It helps us take a good look at the huge problem of child abuse and neglect in our country.

In fact, every day five children DIE from abuse or neglect in the U.S. This is shameful. In the case of Ariel Winter it is hard to know where to start and what is fact and fiction. What we do know is that this 14-year-old star of Modern Family has a sad home life mainly due to her mother Chrisoula Workman. As is typical in Hollywood there is now a fight over the $75,000 a week Ariel earns and who should have custody/guardianship over her and obviously over her money.

What is curious is that Workman has called the authorities on her own daughter and thus has incriminated herself! In September Workman filed a police report and a DCFS report that she “walked in” on her 14-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old boyfriend having sex. To make matters worse she claims that a sexual relationship was going on for five months. So, where was Workman, the mother, during this time? Why wasn’t she protecting her child and why did she ONLY report this months later?

Additionally, Ariel was placed Oct 3 under the temporary care of her older sister Shanelle Workman partly because of allegations that their mother was emotionally and physically abusive. Even more shocking is that Shanelle was placed in foster care in the 1990’s due to problems with her mother. There is no doubt that there is a form of child abuse here. The question is to what extent.

Chrisoula seems to have handled the situation ALL wrong, and certainly not like a caring mother. Now she will have to face a CPS- DCFS investigation and if Chrisoula is wrong, she herself could face multiple charges. If Chrisoula is right, the boyfriend Cameron Palatas could face statutory rape charges himself. What a sad mess and true disaster. Those of familiar with the CPS- DCFS system know that not only is it flawed it is BROKEN. Often times unskilled volunteers called CASA workers get involved and complicate things further. In cases like this when there is a great deal of money at stake, these cases if not handled properly drag on for years and lead to fight after fight.

I have much experience guiding clients through the CPS process. When it works it does save children and when it doesn’t it destroys them. Family court is one of the worst places on earth. It will be interesting to see how justice works in this case. Certainly I will be watching closely and hoping that if nothing else we can use this case as a lighting rod to look at the problem and sickness of child abuse in this country.

Stay tuned…

Sentencing Day for Sandusky…

Sentencing day is here for Sandusky and what is he doing? Making media statements from Jail of course! So, either his attorneys have given up telling him not to talk or they all are media whores and nuts. Whatever the case, this is NOT the type of thing I ever let my clients do. A statement to the judge is crucial and must be carefully crafted. There should be no media comments whatsoever.

Yet look at the statements Sandusky is making. He says he is innocent of “the alleged disgusting acts.” WHAT! The acts are disgusting not allegedly, they are. Why Sandusky uses the word allegedly tells us a whole lot about him. You see he really doesn’t think the acts are disgusting or they wouldn’t be allegedly, they would just be. This is one very ill man.

I have been asked what will happen to him once he leaves county jail for State Prison. The answer is not much. He will be held in protective custody for a while and then he will join the general population. What people don’t realize is that that general population is apt to have many sex offenders just like Sandusky. Yes, we often house them together. Then it becomes a kind of don’t as, don’t tell.

I often work and coach people who can and have changed from their criminal thinking. I write that change is possible with hard work and I am living proof. Plus, I really believe this. Well, except when it comes to child molesters and rapists. There simply is no evidence that this population can change. SO, the question becomes what to do with people like this. Sad to say but the only option is incarceration, we must protect our children. As for famous cases like Sandusky, let these be lessons that there are consequences and they will catch up to you. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

The Casey Anthony Interview

Rumors abound that Casey Anthony will be on a major TV talk show once her probation is lifted. Of course the end of probation just happens to be right when the new FALL TV season begins. There are many boycotts and petitions going around to try to stop somebody from doing this interview. Most specifically there is a rumor that Katie Couric and People Magazine will do a major splash together.

Here are my thoughts on this or any other interview with Casey Anthony. I believe an interview WILL happen. Will a network pay? Absolutely. This is where Anthony will get into Federal trouble. Watch for her to under report the fee or “launder” it. Additionally, Casey Anthony has a huge I.R.S. lien that must be paid or settled.

There are many ways the interview can be done in a way as to not highlight Anthony, but highlight the crimes she was CONVICTED of including child neglect. Since the interview will happen, I am hopeful that there will be many aspects of the show that will shine a light on child abuse, manipulating the system, re-entry and of course the consequences of this crime.

As I write and comment about often, the Casey Anthony case is unique in that there is so much attention and very strong feelings. A show that shows where the process broke down and what we can do to make sure this never happens again would be a good thing.

The bottom line is that I suggest everybody channel their energy into making the interview only a small component of a BIGGER picture. If this interview is done “correctly” it will not only validate the strong feelings but also help other families and children. And, again, there is no way Casey Anthony will be able to hold on to any of the money. She simply isn’t that smart and she has a criminal mind. There are eight criminal thinking errors including grandiosity and mollification. Anthony actually has all eight and a serious psychopathy.

Is Casey Anthony guilty? That would never be my question. I would ask how many things is she guilty of??? As we all know, I believe that change is possible in most cases. In this case there is no chance of change as there is no remorse, not even for the loss of her child, and the crime itself is too deep and serious in so many ways.

Networks if you are reading this I urge you to consider the bigger picture and not grant a vanity piece but rather use Anthony as she has used the system and society. What comes around goes around…

Casey Anthony + Probation= EPIC FAIL

Here we go again. Another month, another probation report and meeting between Ms. Casey Anthony and her Florida probation officer. Remember, Anthony is on formal probation. That means she has requirements ranging from therapy to financial matters. Casey also has to prove that she has a job or goes to school.

Thus far it has been apparent to me that Anthony has been working the system. Yes, this started when she was first let out on bond and continued while she was in county jail. Then she worked her magic during her trial. Somehow this case became so confused that the Florida Department of Corrections sent Anthony a letter while she was in jail that she had completed her one-year of probation. As I said on numerous media outlets, that would be impossible, and of course when challenged, Anthony was ordered to serve her formal probation in FLORIDA.

What makes Casey Anthony so special? The media attention and the fear that brings the system when there have been grave mistakes made. Yes, I am sure that the Florida Department of Corrections, her probation officer and the criminal court system wishes she would just fade away. How naïve! In fact, Anthony and the attention she brings will only build as we begin summer, and as luck would have it will climax just in time for the upcoming fall television season.

I have written and said numerous times that I thought Anthony had already violated her probation. I stand by this comment. After all, she claims to have no money, no job and no resources, yet she is making video blogs on a NEW computer and of course selling them. Who does she think she is? Is it any wonder that she is delusional and grandiose? Of course not. Did you ever think just who has been paying her bills?

Here are my thoughts- Some based on rumor, some based on non published yet factual information:

Casey Anthony has had a series of benefactors ranging from crazy fame whores to people who think she is innocent.

Anthony has been selling her information to various outlets like Radar Online. There is NO such thing as “leaked” information in this case. Everything has been potted and planned.

Anthony has received cash payments from other media outlets and “friends” of hers have also filtered some of this money to her. In the real world this is called money laundering.

Anthony does not have a job and still provides her probation officer no source of income. After all of these months a regular person on probation would be called to task. In this case we even have Anthony flaunting her success in front of the world and still no action by the judicial system.

The Federal Government is looking into this matter because Anthony has I.R.S. tax liens that she is making no payments on.

SO, what to conclude and what’s next????? I still maintain that at some point Anthony will be called on all of this illegal behavior. The problem may well be that the probation department has made errors just like the Department of Corrections did and like the court itself did. They are embarrassed.

As anybody who follows my work and me knows, I am a believer in EQUAL JUSTICE. Nothing about the probation of Casey Anthony has been equal or fair. This I know having been on probation myself. I urge everybody to demand more while keeping our eyes on the bigger picture of child abuse and use this case as THE example to make positive change. Do not let the initial success of Casey Anthony take the focus off the fact that a child is dead and 5 children die EVERYDAY in the U.S. from abuse or neglect. We must stop child abuse.

What Whitney Houston and Casey Anthony Have in Common?

The lives of Whitney Houston and Casey Anthony have one thing in common only- opportunities to shine the light of awareness.

The recent death of Whitney Houston has brought out the very best and of course the very worst in media and humanity. Let’s get the worst out of the way first. Whitney Houston, even with all of her issues and demons, was not a woman of ill character. So, those in media who are USING Ms. Houston’s name solely to get press are way off the mark. She certainly should not even be thought of in the same sentence as the likes of a Casey Anthony. It is clear that many media mavens miss the ratings bonanza that Casey Anthony brought them.

But, we can use both stories as teachable moments and to shine the light on serious issues. As you all know, I am primarily known as a true crime insider and commentator on all things criminal justice, prison and most importantly re-entry into society. My goal with the Casey Anthony case is to highlight how our court system works and what needs to change. Further, I think the Casey Anthony case must be used to shine the light on America’s dirty little secret, child abuse and neglect. The fact is that FIVE children die every day in this country from abuse or neglect. So, while I empathize with Caylee Anthony I try to keep the conversation going by talking about all of the other abused children we must take care of.

This brings me to the story of the day and Whitney Houston. The only similarity between Casey Anthony and Whitney Houston is the gigantic platform these cases have presented us with. The responsibility of how to handle that platform is a large one. Whitney Houston should not be used as a case where we point fingers and make assumptions. Facts are facts. Addiction kills and there is hardly a family in America that is not affected by substance abuse. Here is where we must be careful. As many of you know, I write about my own experiences in Federal Prison and probation. I have written about everything from daily prison life to how the FBI conducts investigations to alternative sentences and yes, even how to “pee in a cup” for probation and what that is like. I write from my heart in the hope that my experiences will help others. I will do the same with this post.

Many headline grabbers have very big catch phrases and are good at stirring up junk science. From Nancy Grace to Dr. Drew, none have gotten the addiction piece right. As a former drug abuser I do not believe that once an addict always an addict like Dr. Drew says, nor do I believe that AA works for everybody and that a “sober” person can never take a medication or have a drink. Every case and medical history is unique. Otherwise, we would not have so many people who fight this demon and die from this issue everyday. The same goes with how to solve our mass incarceration problem and what many of us call our Incarceration Nation. Is it a coincidence that our jails and prisons are full of addicts? In fact, over 75% of people incarcerated have some form of mental health issue or substance abuse condition.

Let’s keep it real. Addiction turns victims into victimizers. It is a thief in the night that takes away common sense, dignity and often leads to crime and then punishment. I do believe that some addicts benefit from time in prison if only to sober up for a prolonged period. I also believe that many of the in prison programs for addicts work. I participated in a Federal prison program called the RDAP program that not only teaches about addiction but criminal thinking and self-realization. After all, addicts exhibit criminal thinking errors. Addicts lie, sometimes cheat and always suffer from low self-esteem and shame. ALWAYS.

Addiction turns moms into children and children into care takers. It is a vicious cycle just like that of domestic abuse and crime. Addiction, like prison, does not discriminate. It is an equal opportunity condition. Yes, some may use more expensive drugs or alcohol, but the result is the same. But, just as one can overcome prison and re-enter society with success, so can an addict. I know. I have been there and done it. Desperation is desperation. And just as prison affects the entire family, addiction affects does as well.

Yes, my thoughts here are deeply personal just like when I write about prison and our court system. I know that we can change things. I know that name-calling and finger pointing is useless and harmful. It may be uncomfortable, but we must empower each other not tear people down. So, to the media whores who are desperate to keep themselves in the news by calling Whitney Houston a “crack whore” or a junkie, watch out. This type of non-journalism will not last. We must demand more from our media personalities. We do not all have to agree but we all, including me, must offer solutions and in times of need- respect.

If you are suffering from addiction or know somebody who is, reach out. Always remember that you are worthy. I always say that change is possible- once you admit you need to make that change. For a list of resources please note my previous post. And never give up on yourself or anybody you love. Please let’s use the death of Whitney Houston to look at what we can all do to prevent other such tragedies. Yes, there is a link between substance abuse and crime and the time is now to find solutions.
